IHF Announce World Club Championships in Egypt

The world of handball is set to witness an exciting transformation as the International Handball Federation (IHF) unveils a major rebranding of its flagship club competition. From 2024 onwards, the prestigious IHF Men’s Super Globe will be known as the IHF Men’s Club World Championship, cementing its status as the most thrilling men’s handball club competition globally.

A New Era Begins

The rebranded competition will feature the world’s top club teams battling it out for the coveted title in Egypt. The IHF, in collaboration with the Egyptian Handball Federation (EHF) and Sports United, has signed a new contract extending over the next three editions of the tournament. These events will take place at the New Administrative Capital Hall, a venue that also hosted matches during the 2021 IHF Men’s World Championship.

The official signing ceremony, held on Wednesday, 22 May at the historic Abdeen Palace in Cairo, saw the presence of key figures including Dr. Ashraf Sobhi, Minister of Youth and Sports; Dr. Hassan Moustafa, President of the International Handball Federation; Dr. Mohamed El-Amin, President of the Egyptian Handball Federation; and representatives from the United Sports Company, Mohamed Yahya Lotfy and Saif Al-Waziri.

The Competition Format

The IHF Men’s Club World Championship will feature nine elite teams, including the reigning champions and the continental champions from Asia, Africa, Europe, Oceania, South and Central America, and North America and the Caribbean. An additional host team and a wild card entry, awarded by the IHF Executive Committee, will complete the competitive line-up.

Further details regarding the schedule, organizing dates, and participating teams will be communicated in due course. Handball enthusiasts around the world eagerly anticipate the 18th edition of this prestigious event, marking Egypt as the fourth country to host the competition after Austria, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. Notably, Egypt previously hosted the championship in 2007, where Ciudad Real emerged victorious.

The Return of the IHF Intercontinental Cup

Adding to the excitement, 2025 will witness the return of another historic competition under the IHF’s aegis. The IHF Intercontinental Cup, last played in 1998, 2000, and 2002, will make its comeback. This competition will feature six teams, with details about the participating teams, schedule, and hosting venue to be announced in due course.

A Bright Future for Handball

The rebranding of the IHF Men’s Super Globe to the IHF Men’s Club World Championship and the return of the IHF Intercontinental Cup mark significant milestones in the world of handball. These developments are set to enhance the sport’s global appeal, providing thrilling competitions and showcasing the pinnacle of handball talent.
